Qualifying ran rather late on Friday night at Alamo Motorplex, but the FUNNY CAR CHAOS crew got in the first two (of three) qualifying sessions. Thirty cars made at least one attempt and seven of them dipped into the 3-second zone on the 1/8-th mile surface. Leading the pack was a surprisingly strong team that has only run at the season opener at the Texas Motorplex. Following close behind them on Friday's list were the top two runners this season, with some of the usually strong cars well back of their times.
We lead off our coverage with a picture from the first session, with Nick Poloson (near lane) in the "Bucket List" taking on the #2 man in the points chase, Kirk Williams (far lane) in his "200 Proof" entry. Poloson's best run was 3.829 - 186.03 slotted him into the #4 position on the ladder, while Williams landed in #2 with an even better 3.703 - 207.28, which stood for the provisional top speed of the meet.
In the second qualifier, Williams moved over to the near lane, with Shayne Lawson in the "Man O' War" on the far side. Lawson earned a spot in the top eight ("A" field) with his #8 qualifying 4.063 - 144.65 early shutoff effort. If he can keep the loud pedal down a little longer in today's final qualifying session, he could solidify his hold on a spot in the top field.
Leaving hard with the flames high, Ronny Young in the iconic "Blue Max" took the top spot with an excellent 3.685 - 200.98 to show that they came to contend for the event win. In the far lane, Scott Cousimano in the "WTF Racing" Eric Medlen tribute car ran into trouble and slowed to a 6.475 - 78.27 clocking, leaving him in the #23 position.
Our final pair features two-time defending series champion Ken Singleton in his very familiar "High Risk" car putting down a 3.746 - 200.80 that landed him in the #3 spot on the charts. Barely visible in the far lane is Tom Furches in his Corvette-bodied "Made in America", as he pedalled his way to a 5.433 - 151.06 timeslip, slotting into the #21 spot on the list.
